On Saturday we took the kids to climb Wassau Peak. We loaded up lots of water and some snacks and headed off on our way. It all started great with Zach leading the way, which he did almost the entire time, encouraging us to keep up and keep going. We had a wonderful time. We would stop every once in a while to rest and refuel. After walking for about an hour or so we started wondering when we would get to the turnoff for the peak. We were starting to run short on water and were getting a little tired. We decided to keep going a little further because it seemed like we were really close. Take in mind these were not paved trails. We were in a state park out in the middle of nowhere. In some spots the trails were so narrow we had to walk single file or so rocky we had to help the kids climb through. All in all we were having a great time. Until we ran out of water. We were about 2 hours from where we started and realized we better get back to our car and our water. We turned around and headed back. After the 2 hour journey back with no water, the kids exhausted and all of us dehydrated, we finally made it back to the car. We stopped to check the map at the trailhead only to realize we had missed the turnoff for the peak and the trail we were on a trail that would have ended 22 miles later at the other side of the park. Thank goodness we turned around. On the way home the kids chugged a 32-oz bottle of water each and Greg and I shared a gallon of water. Once we got home you would think the kids would have been worn out but they were bursting energy from the seams while Greg and I were exhausted. All in all we spent 4 hours hiking and walked 11.5 miles (round-trip). It feels like I spent 4 hours on a stair master. Both Greg and I have aching calves and are tired but we plan to walk the peak this week while the kids are in school. Go us!!!
